Program Description Youth Program Coordinator-Candice Kilduff Moving Mountains-Sullivan Academy program is designed for the purpose of preparing 6th, 7th, & 8th graders residing in New Britain for the transition to ninth grade.? The program is named after the founder of Opportunities Industrialization Center, Inc., The Rev. Dr. Leon Howard Sullivan?s book Moving Mountains.?This book emphasizes self-help, while encouraging youth to invest in their communities as volunteers and good citizens.
The program focuses on seven components: 1 Academic Enrichment- working with teachers and parents to make sure the students are completing assignments, getting the necessary help, etc. 2 Life Coping Skills- workshops will be conducted to address issues through job shadowing, speakers, and field trips to businesses. 3 ?Summer Programming- participation during the school year will lead to a summer work experience through OIC or 6 week incentive based enrichment program. 4 Parental Involvement- encouraging parents to become advocates for their child, providing information and tools that assist them throughout their child?s educational journey. Parents will also attend workshops during the school year. 5 Evaluation- Progress reports and report cards will be used as indicators of progress in academic and behavior.
